CL 09, M23: Final: NSW v. T&T: Brett Lee, Boss in Final! NSW wins CL 09!

Brett Lee, was the boss in final! His heroics won the Champions League trophy for New South Wales lead by Simon Katich.

Put into bat, Hughes went for 3. Warner took most of the strike and gave just 4 deliveries to Hughes in 3 overs. Trying to maintain the run rate, he played across and lost his stumps.

Warner followed him to the pavilion in the next over for just 19. Katich scored just 16 and Henriques 4. S Smith alone made good contribution at the top with 33. New South Wales were 75 for 5 in 10.1 overs.

Wicket Keeper D Smith was bowled by Rampual for 3 which gave T&T a good chance to restrict the NSW. Brett Lee joined S Smith when the score was 83 for 6 in 11.2 overs.

Brett Lee took charge and played marvellous shots along the ground and also over the ropes. He cleared the rope 5 times and hit only one four. Both Smith and Lee took on Simmons and scored 23 from his 2 overs.

Rampual was the pick of the bowler with 3 for 20 in his 4. Dwyne Bravo also picked 2 wickets.

Chasing 160, the safe bet was in favor of T&T. They have chased above 170 couple of times, including 171 against NSW in their league encounter.

But, Brett Lee had a different story to write. He had Perkins stumps dislocated. He moved and tried to hit it over covers and missed straight delivery.

In the 2nd over, Barath hit two fours and a six in the first 3 balls. He chased a wide delivery only to get a thin under edge and give a simple catch to D Smith. That was a poor shot as 15 runs have already come out of that over.

Lee took a wonderful return catch to dismiss dangerous Simmons for just 4. T&T were 21 for 3 in 2.2 overs.

The Bravo-Ganga pair, which won the Semi Final against Cape Cobras steadied the innings. They did not want to lose another wicket. They managed to add 24 more runs to the total. When it was going good, Bravo tried to push the ball loosely but ended up dragging it to the stumps. Big break through from Bollinger.

Ganga was caught in the last ball of the 10th over for 19. T&T were struggling at half-way mark. They needed one more big innings from Pollard.

T&T needed 92 from 60 balls. As exected Pollard damaged the NSW bowling attack. He hit huge sixes sending the ball to 2nd tier.

Ramdin was caught at point trying to steer to third man. S Ganga and Pollard got out in the same over. Pollard hit two sixes of Harutiz. In the last ball of the over, going for the third six, he mistimed it an ballooned it long on. Brett Lee was in picture once again taking a good catch to relieve the New South Wales team and their supporters.

Stuart Clark dismissed Stewart and Mohammed in the next over. This is the first time T&T were dismissed in less than 20 overs.

NSW clinched the first edition of the Champions League, thanks to all-round performance from Brett Lee--48 from 31 balls with 1 four and 5 sixes; 2 for 10 in 2 overs; and took 2 catches.

He was awarded both man of the match and also the series.

CL 09, M22: SF 2: T&T v. CC: Bravo takes T&T to Final!

What a brilliant innings from Dwayne Bravo? A match-winning preformance at a crucial stage which took Trinad and Tobago to the final. T&T will play against New South Wales on Friday.

Chasing a stiff target of 176, the start was good with Perkins and Barath adding 53 in 5 overs. Perkins got run out for 20. It was a peculiar run out! Barath played the ball to point, the direct hit from Puttick knocked the stumps and rebound. Perkins went for a run but Baranth stood his ground. He was half the way. The ball was easily passed on to Lee and he takes the stump with the ball.

Barath was trapped leg before off Duminy for 29, adding just 5 runs with Simmons. No big contribution came from the first top 3 batsmen.

Simmons got out for 20 when the score was 85 in 10 overs. One should say that Simmons did not utilize the chances given to him by Cape Cobra fielder Davis. He dropped two chances--one was a sitter on 11, and hard chance on 14. Kleinveldt did not make the same mistake when offered the chance. He grabbed a straight catch at deep midwicket off Ontong.

T&T needed 91 in 65 balls with Bravo joining the party with Skipper Ganga. Bravo was dropped on 17 by Ontong at long on off Duminy. The drop catch turned the match and took it away from Cape Cobras.

Bravo then went on to score unbetaen 58 in just 34 balls which had 4 fours and 3 sixes. Ganga was on 44 not out and built a good winning partnership of 93 runs in 55 balls as T&T won with 4 balls remaining.

Earlier, Bravo picked was smashed in his 3 overs for 46 runs. He was the costly bowlers and Cape Cobras picked him very well. Bravo took a revenge and should be a happy man.

For Cape Cobras, Gibbs scored runs, for a change. His 42 came in 27 balls with 5 fours and a six. He hit 4 fours in single over from Bravo.

It was Duminy, who took charge of the innings and made a wonderful 61. He picked the spots very well and hit 3 huge sixes and also 4 fours.

Simmons was the most economical bowler picking 2 wickets in 3 overs giving away 17 runs.

CL 09, M20: League B: DD v. CC: Bowlers Give Consolation Win for DD!

In the final league stage match, DD finally tasted win, but it does not matter to them as they are already out of the tournament along with Royal Challengers and Deccan Chargers.

Put into bat, Delhi made 114. Dilshan was bowled for 1 and then his partner-skipper Gambhir was also bowled but for a duck.

Other young players like Nagar and Salvi were given chance in this match. Sehwag was rested.

OA Shah gave DD some respect by scoring unbeaten 39 in 38 balls. Delhi's only six came from his bat. Without his contribution, Delhi would have been bundled for less than 100.

Chasing 115 is an easy task, especially for a team like Cape Cobras, who have already qualified for Semi Finals.

But the DD bowlers had different script. Gibbs once again failed and recorded his second duck in this tournament. He was trapped plumb in front of the wicket off Dilshan. Gambhir's tactic of opening the bowling with Dilshan paid-off.

Skipper Puttick was bowled by Nannes for 6. Davis and Duminy revived the innings with a 27-run partnership for the third wicket. The direct hit by Sangwan from point sent Davids to pavilion--turning point.

Wickets fell frequently and another turning point was the wicket of Duminy. Kleinveldt was caught by Shah off Mishra. Two deliveries later, Duminy trying to poke at the ball, it sneaks through between bat and pad and knocked the stumps. Delhi was back in the game and they have seen light at the end of the tunnel.

Nannes picked 3 wickets, Nagar, Mishra, and Dilshan picked 2 each and dismissed Cape Cobras for 84. This is the first time that Cape Cobras have lost all the 10 wickets in this edition of CL. Also, so far, they have registered most ducks in the innings--Gibbs, Henderson, Zondeki.

CL 09, M19: League A: T&T v. Eag: T&T Qualifes for Semi, Eagles Out!

In a thrilling last League A match, Barath of T&T gave a wonderful start to his team. The opening partnership of 66 between Perkins (35) and Barath (63) set the tone for the match.

Perkins hit a four and a six in the first over bowled by Mpitsang. He did not leave him in his second over as well as he it a six and a four. Barath opened up his shoulder and hit a six in the last ball. Mpitsang conceeded 28 runs in his 2 overs.

Perkins and Barath displayed fire work during this Diwali season with fours and sixes. Perkins had 3 fours and 3 sixes to his account while Barath, playing his first T20 international game, had 4 each to his innings. He scored 63 from 41 balls and Perkins took 25 balls for his 35. At the end of the powerplay of 6 overs, T&T were 64 for no loss.

Simmons contributed 40 from his bat consuming 25 deliveries. At the end of 10 overs, T&T were 96 for 1. deVilliers over changed the momentum and gave confidence to the batsmen. His 3rd over, 14th of the innings went for 20 runs including a six and 3 fours. At the end of 18 overs, T&T were 177 for 4.

Towards the end, it was Steward who hit 3 sixes and 3 fours in his 11-ball innings in which he scored 33. He hit 3 sixes and 2 fours in du Preez's over, 19th of the innings. This over added 27 to the total and helped T&T to cross 200 and also put highest score in this edition of CL.

To qualify, Eagles should reach 214 in 14.2 overs--86 balls. It is never an easy task and if happens, it is a miracle. Though Eagles fought well, the miracle did not happen.

At the end of powerplay, Eagles were 77 for 2. Though Wyk and Rossouw were hitting fours and sixes, they could not maintain it till the end. Wyk was trapped lbw after hitting 3 continuous fours.

Rossouw made 44 from 19 with 5 fours and 3 sixes. Skipper Dippenaar made 33 but all these were not enough for Eagles. At 14.2 overs, they were 132 for 3. Even if they had won this game, it wouldn't matter to T&T as they have already qualified on better net run rate along with NSW.

Eagles ended their innings at 189 short by 24 runs.

CL 09, M18: League A: NSW v. Som: Somerset meekly surrenders to NSW!

In a no importance match for Somerset, they surrendered to NSW bowling attack. Put into bat, Somerset made just 111. Stuart Clark picked 3 wickets giving away 15 runs in his 4 overs.

Though it is not important for Somerset, it is not the same for NSW. A crucial two points will confirm their birth to semi finals.

They utilized the opportunity, attacked and restricted the Somerset. Chasing 112 is easy for a team like NSW. Warner fired fours and sixes from his bat. He scored 40 in just 16 balls which had 6 boundaries and sixes.

New South Wales reached the target losing 4 wickets and in just 11.5 overs. If Eagles beat T&T with better run rate, then there will be a tied position. The semi final birth will be based on the result of T&T v. Eagles.

CL 09, M17: Leage B: RC v. DD: Taylor Stiches Perfectly for RC: All IPL teams Shown Exit Door!

With Royal Challengers already not qualified for semi final spot, Delhi's encounter against them was crucial for Delhi. A win for Delhi would have given them a chance to compete for the last four spot. But, their rivals Royal Challengers Bangalore devasted their hopes with a convincing win by 8 wickets with almost 5 overs remaining.

Put into bat, Delhi's skipper once again failed and that too in a crucial do-or-die match. He managed only 11 and struggled to find the form. He consumed 18 balls for his 11 runs. But, his partner and ex-captain Sehwag was in firing mood. He hit 6 fours and a six in his 29 ball innings. His usual cuts and lofted shots boosted the run rate. He was finally caught by Pandey off Merwe for 47.

Sehwag's innings, no one crossed 20 runs. Kumble picked 3 wickets. He was severely punished in the last match against Victoria. But, he proved his class in this match and was the pick of the bowler.

Chasing 139, Delhi had some hope when they dismissed the dangerous Uthappa for just 9. Another hard hitter Pandey pulled his muscle and had to go. He his request for a runner was turned down and he could not continue.

Dravid adn Taylor added 93 for the 2nd wicket in which Dravid scored 32. Though he was not included in the ODI team, he showed his class and proved that he is still capable of playing international ODI cricket.

The man for RC was Taylor. He scored his second fifty of this tournament. This fifty earned his team a consolation win as the result does not have any impact for Bangalore team for the semi final spot as they have alreday missed it.

Taylor's unbeaten 65 came in 38 balls which had 6 fours and 4 sixes. Kohli accompanied him till end and was not out on 24.

CL 09, M16: League B: CC v. Vic: Davis Makes it Easy for Cape Cobras

In a delayed start match due to security reasons, Davis made it easy for Cape Cobras. The match was reduced to 17 overs a side as there was a security alert in the Bangalore Chinnaswamy Stadium.

A cricketer from one of the Indian states, Jammu and Kashmir, was said to have carrying a bag of explosives. He was taken for further questioning but no evidence was found against him.

Deciding to bat, Victoria made 125. A strange record happened in the innings when both the openers were dismissed for duck. Quiney was caught on the very first ball and two balls later, Hodge dragged one inside. This really put the Victorians on the back foot. Blizzard and David Hussey made some runs and took the score to 27 in 3.5 overs. Blizzard was caught and then David Hussey got out for 19 when the score was 59 in the 10th over.

Wade made some quick runs and that took Victoria to 125. Wade scored 18 off 10 balls with 3 fours.

Chasing 126 in 17 overs, skipper Puttick went early for 4. Davis joined Brand played cautiously and kept the scoreboard moving. Brand was run out with a direct hit from McKay. Davis and Duminy played well and took their side towards the target.

Davis scored 69 in 54 balls including 7 fours and 2 sixes. Duminy contributed 18 from 23 balls. These two added 88 runs in 69 balls.

Davos was chosen for the man of the match for his match winning unbeaten 69.

CL 09, M15: Leage A: T&T v. NSW: Pollard Cyclone Swept Away NSW!

What an innings by Pollard? He completely took away the match from New South Wales' hand. Chasing a tough target of 171 against a bowling attack of 3 international bowlers--Brett Lee, Hauritz and Stuart Clark, T&T were not the favorites.

The three wickets in a span of 4 runs put NSW in the driver seat. Ganga and DM Bravo added 47 for the 4th wicket. Ganga made 32 but poor running decision cost his wicket. The ball wrapped on his leg and there was an appeal for leg before. Ganga wanted a single but Bravo was not interested. Before Ganga made a come back, Roher was quick and struk the stumps.

Ramdin joined Bravo and put a 14 runs before Bravo also lost his wicket through a second run out. The poor calling on the second run gave a crucial wicket to NSW.

T&T needed 80 runs in 7 overs. Pollard and Ramdin tried to improvise the run rate but a good throw by Lee from deep extra cover provided another wicket to NSW. Ramdin need to learn how to run. He reached the crease but his bat was on the air.

T&T needed 51 runs in the last 4 overs with 4 wickets in hand. Henriques's over to Pollard changed the equation. He went for 27 runs in one over, the highest run scored in an over in the Champions League.

He started with a wide and then followed by two fours and two sixes in the first four balls. He did not score a run in the 5th ball but the last ball went for a six.

None of the shots were mistimed or edged. All of the hits were perfectly timed and sixes were huge.

24 from 18 balls. Brett Lee went for 8 runs including a boundary by Pollard, but this one was edged to third-man boundary.

16 from 2 overs, but Pollard needed just 3 deliveries from Henriques. Going for 27 runs in the previous over, the bowler wuld have lost the confidence. He was given the ball again. First one was a four and the next two were sixes which also brought Pollard's unimaginable fifty, in record 18 balls. T&T did not lose a match still in this edition of CL.

Earlier, the start for NSW was a record partnership of 121 runs, the first 100-runs partnership for the 1st wicket in this edition of Champions League.

Hughes made 83 in 64 balls with 11 fours and a six while his partner Warner made 63 in 41 with 5 fours and 3 sixes. These two batsmen set the tone for NSW innings as they put 121 in 92 balls.

Rampual went for 38 in 3 overs, but DJ Bravo picked 3 wickets for 31 in his 4 overs.

CL 09, M14: League A: Eag v. Som: deVilliers Storms Somerset!

deVilliers picked 4 wickets for Eagles and set the platform for their victory. Deciding to bat first, Somerset did not had a good start. deVilliers picked the first 3 wickets and put Somerset on the back foot. Kieswetter was trapped leg before for 8 and so Suppiah for first ball duck, and de Bruyn for 2. Durston came to the rescue with his wonderful 57 off 32 balls which had 10 fours. It really helped his team to put a fighting 132 on the board.

Durston's innings went in vain as Somerset bowlers were not able to restrict Eagles batsmen within 133. Opener van Wyk made 47 and Bailey made 29 which helped the team to ease through the chase.

CL 09, M13: League B: Vic v. RC: McDonald Stars in Victoria's Victory!

RC deciding to bat, did not utilize the advantage of winning the toss. Kallis was dropped in this match. IPL Century scorer Pandey opened the innings with Uthappa. They made 39 in 4.4 overs, a good start, before Uthappa was bowled by McKay. Uthappa tried to push the good length ball without moving his feet, the ball took the inside edge and dragged it to the stumps.

Pandey and Dravid built a 21-run partnership. The wickets were falling at regular intervals and no big partnership was built after that except the unbroken 23 runs for the 7th wicket.

Dravid scored 33 and was the only batsman to score a six in Bangalore innings. McDonald picked 4 wickets including a lucky decision against Dravid. Royal Challengers ended with 127 in 20 overs.

The chase was easy for Victoria and they were never under trouble. Poor bowling from the Bangalore team helped Victoria to seal the victory and lead the table with 4 points incuding the 2 brought from the Group Matches.

David Hussey finished the match in style with 3 sixes from Kumble's over. He remained not out on 31 which came off 15 balls including 2 fours and 3 sixes.

With this loss, Royal Challengers Bangalore is almost near the exit gate. Already one Indian Deccan Chargers did not qualify for Super 8. Even if RC beat DD in their last match, they will end with 2.

Victoria has already 4 points and Cape Cobras has 2. If Delhi beat Cape Cobras and lose to Royal Challengers, then Delhi, RC and Cobras will have 2 points each and net run rate will come into play, which can push either Delhi or RC.

CL 09, M11: B: Eag v. Sus: Eagles beat Sussex in Super Over Thriller!

What a match? The match of the tournament so far! The team that wins the match qualifies for the super 8. Both the teams scored 119 and the match moved towards super over (one-over elimination).

The rules of the Super Over:

Each team nominates three batsmen and one bowler;
If they lose two wickets the innings (of six balls) is considered over;
If it's another tie, the team with most number of sixes in the Eliminator wins;
If that's also equal, it's the team with the most sixes in the match that wins (Sussex has three sixes, Eagles have two).

Super Over:

Eagles batted first with Rossouw and Ryan McLaren. Yasir Arafat, who bowled the 20th over had the ball in hand.

Rossuouw and McLaren scored a single each in the first two balls. Third ball was a dot ball. Rossouw hit a six over long on. Yasir bowled a little wide on the off and got a dot ball. Last ball was a single and Eagles ended with 9 runs.

de Villiers struck with the first two balls and finished the match in favor of Eagles. He had Dwayne Smith clean bowled uprooting his off stump. With just one more wicket in hand, 5 balls, 10 runs needed. Hamilton-Brown was also dismissed the same way--looked like a replay. Eagles qualified for the super 8 by 9 runs.

Scores Tied

Chasing 120, Rossouw took Eagles closer to the target. He scored a wonderful 65 which gave hopes to Eagles. His innings had 7 fours and 2 sixes in 62 balls.

Rossouw and Ryan McLaren gave a good start with a 72-run partnership for the first wicket in 11.1 overs. Ryan scored just 16 of those while Rossouw touched his 50 (in 39 balls).

Eagles needed 46 in 8 overs with 9 wickets in hand. The collapse started after Wyk was caught by Joyce off Chawla for 2. 39 needed off 6 overs with 8 wickets in hand.

Two overs needed 17. Hamilton-Brown bowled a good tight over which went for 5 runs. The key turning point was the crucial wicket of Rossouw, caught behind.

Last over needed 12 runs, Yasir Arafat had the ball. The first 3 balls went for single. McLaren hit a four through an inner edge which went to a four in fine leg. Nobody can set a field set for the french cut.

Last two balls required 5 runs. Arafat bowled a brilliant yorker on the wide off stump which went to keeper.

One ball, 5 runs, Ryan McLaren was again on strike. The delivery pitched on length was clubbed to the wide-long on boundary. Though for a moment everyone thought that it was a six, it was actually a boundary which forced a tie.

Sussex Innings

Deciding to bat first, Sussex did not utilize the batting conditions. No batsmen could make merry as the highest score was 25 by number 7 batsmen J Gatting. C de Villiers and du Preez picked 2 wickets each. The bowlers maintained it tight and did not allow the batsmen to improvise the scoring rate.

Super 8 Qualification

With this win, Eagles qualified for the super 8. New South Wales already qualifed by winning both their matches convincingly.

CL 09, M10: D: Way v. Vic: Victoria enters Super 8 Despite Loss!

The must win for Wayamba from Sri Lanka resulted in their favor but it did not help them to qualify for the next round. A must win with higher net run rate was what needed for Wayamba but they managed only a 15-run win.

Chasing 118, Victoria was able to manage only 103. They could have gone for big runs as they had lots of wickets in hand but could not do so. Hodge scored unbeaten 44 and A McDonald scored 27 not out.

Earlier, Wayamba deciding to bat, scored 118. They lost wickets at regular intervals which made them to go slow on the scoring rate. Harwood picked 3 wickets and also the man of the match.
