CL 09, M5: A: Som v DC: Thomas gives last ball win to Somerset!

All the three Indian teams could not win their matches in their first encounter. All of them have to win their next match, else they are likely to miss the boat to the next round.

Last over required 5 runs and Styris had the ball. Thomas and Hildreth already built a 50-run partnership for the 8th wicket and Hildreth was on strike.

Styris sent the first one full on the leg stump which Hildreth tried to hit it over midwicket, missed it and the ball rubbed the pads and knocked the stumps.

Second ball was a maiden ball and the third was a wicket again. Waller tried to slap the short delivery over midoff, miscued it as it went high in the air where Styris himself grabbed the catch. The good thing for Somerset was that the batsmen have crossed and it brought Thomas on strike.

5 needed from 3 balls with the last pair. As expected, Thomas brought smiles to the Somerset camp.

Styris having bowled three good deliveries, sent a low full toss on the off which Thomas smacked it through point for a welcome boundary.

Two balls, two runs, 1 wicket, but Thomas on strike. Good length delivery was played to mid on and no run was scored.

Last ball, 1 run and 1 wicket. A situation where a tie would have brought the one-over elimination, Thomas did not give room for that. He cut the short delivery on the off side over point boundary! Winning runs for Somerset and disappointment for Deccan Chargers.

"I cannot believe, I've done that," said Thomas.

Early in the innings, the match was under DC's control. Somerset lost 4 wickets for 59 runs in 8.2 overs. The international experienced players, Trescothick (14) and skipper Justin Langer (15) could not make big in this match. DC's were picking wickets regularly and that put Somerset in the back foot. It was Thomas and Hildreth who brought light to Somerset innings. They took the score from 99 for 7 in 13.5 overs to 149 for 8 when Hildreth was bowled in the first ball of 19th over. Thomas contributed an useful unbeaten 30 which gave two points to Somerset.

Earlier, put into bat, Deccan Charges started with Gilchrist and Laxman. The opening partnership of 35 runs was broken by Thomas when Gilly was caught by Trescothick.

Laxman was going great guns and was the top scorer for DC with 46. The tail-enders could not add much value to the innings as DC ended with 153. for 9 in 20 overs. From 86 for 3 in 10 overs, they ended at 153 adding just 67 in the last 10.

Thomas was picked as player of the match for his match winning contribution of unbeaten 30 and two wickets.

A unique record was registered by Deccan Chargers as their skipper Gilchrist used 9 bowlers in the innings for bowling just 20 overs. Gilchrist and Laxman were the only players who did not bowl.
